TRUB XI homebrew competition - October 30, 1999.
Jay Adams NC Brewer of the Year for 1999!
MALT enjoyed great success at the TRUB XI homebrerw competition in Raleigh on October 30. TRUB XI had over 110 entries from around the country and MALT brought home 17 out of the 43 ribbons (40%) awarded!
Unofficially, based on TRUB XI results, event organizers confirmed that Jay Adams is the 1999 North Carolina Brewer of the Year. The official announcement will come later.
The NCBoY award is given to the brewer who scores the most points at the three qualifying events: TRUB, Shamrock Open, and US Open. Jay went into TRUB XI, the final event of NCBoY for 1999, with a solid lead and pulled away from the pack.
His awards from TRUB XI are:
Best of Show - Framboise Lambic
1st - Framboise Lambic
1st - Scottish Ale - heavy
1st - IPA
1st - Robust Porter
3rd - American Brown Ale
3rd - Cream Ale
Jay will probably receive the 1999 NCBoY award at the Shamrock Open next March. Be sure to congratulate him.

Spirit of Free Beer Homebrew Competition
Jay Adams and Brian Cole went up to the Spirit of Free Beer (SoFB) homebrew competition in northern Virginia. Sponsored by Brewers United for Real Potables (BURP), one of the largest homebrew clubs in the country, SoFB is one of the largest homebrew competitions in the country. This years SoFB had over 330 entries.
SoFB is one of only 10 events in the US qualifying for the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB). MCAB is an allstar competition for homebrewers who have won first place in a selected style at one of the qualifying events. These brewers get to submit their winning beer to the MCAB finals where it competes against the winners of other qualifying events in a competition judged by the highest ranking BJCP judges.
Jay won first place at SoFB for his Cannon Fodder Cream Ale, which you have tasted at several MALT events, and third for his Wild Willy's Kiss My Entire Butt Porter (a robust porter). Both Jay's robust porter and his lambic were the top-ranked beers in the MCAB qualifying styles (cream ale was not an MCAB style this year) and both will now go on to the MCAB finals to be held in St. Louis next year. Last year Jay qualified 3 beers for the 1999 MCAB. Now, having qualified 2 more (so far) for the 2000 MCAB, he certainly should be considered one of the best homebrewers in the country.
Brian won first place at SoFB for his Alchemy Munich Dunkel and first place for MALT's Second Runnings ESB. That's right, the beer that some of you helped brew at his house in February from the second runnings off our Y2K barley wine won first at SoFB. What's more, both dark lager and strong bitter are MCAB qualifying styles, so the dunkel and ESB are now eligible for the MCAB in 2000! Brian also entered MALT's Y2K barley wine in SoFB, and, while it didn't win, it scored extremely well, receiving an average score of 40 (out of 50 possible points) from 3 BJCP judges. Scores above 40 are rare, reserved for beer that is an excellent example of the style. This bodes very well for our big beer night in January 2000 when club members will try this beer for the first time. So, MALT members continue to do well in state and regional competitions and will have at least 4 beers competing in the MCAB next year. Not too shabby for a 16-member club that's existed for just over a year. Jay and Brian will fill you in at the June 17 meeting, and we'll drink a celebratory toast.
